What is Esports?

Esports is competitive video gaming organized into leagues, tournaments, and team play. It has grown from a niche hobby into a global industry with professional athletes, coaches, analysts, broadcasters, and event staff. At its core, it applies the same fundamentals as traditional sport: disciplined practice, strategy, teamwork, and performance under pressure. Its benefits extend well beyond the game itself. Players develop strategic thinking and rapid decision-making, communication and collaboration in high-stakes team settings, and resilience through repeated competition and review. Esports also builds real technical and creative skills such as broadcast production, content creation, coaching, and event management. Which opens pathways into STEM-adjacent fields like data analysis and software. Perhaps most importantly, it gives students a structured, inclusive community where effort and improvement are visible and rewarded, reaching young people who may not connect with conventional athletics.

Texas Scholastic Esports Federation brings that structure into a formal, competitive setting. TexSEF is a non-profit organization run by Texas educators, and it operates on a principle its members sum up as "schools make the rules" — putting local educators in charge of how competition works. It describes itself as a community of teachers who believe Esports can be an accessible, inclusive, and equitable path to college, career, and military readiness for all Texas students. Competition runs on two tracks: in-person events and weekly online play, with week-to-week league competition hosted through The Corral, the official online Texas scholastic esports league. TexSEF is also home to the official Texas UNDISPUTED Esports State Championship.

Through TexSEF, competitors gain experience in a real competitive environment with weekly league matches building toward a state championship. All while developing the teamwork, communication, and composure that esports is uniquely good at teaching. The program also creates a pathway for students to represent their school, building school spirit and giving participants a sense of belonging and purpose. TexSEF's educator-led, equitable-by-design approach means competitors leave with skills that transfer directly to academics, careers, and life beyond the game.
